A Chinese company called Photon Matrix just started mass-producing a portable laser mosquito killer. It’s called the Photon Matrix — named after the company — and it’s exactly what it sounds like. A small device that uses radar and laser beams to shoot mosquitoes out of the air. No chemicals. No smoke. Just a tiny laser pulse that hits the wings mid-flight.
The company is based in Changzhou, a city near Shanghai. They spent three years building this thing from scratch. Hardware, algorithms, the whole package. And here’s the part that got me: they bred their own mosquitoes for testing. Like, they raised mosquitoes in a lab just to shoot them with lasers.
That’s either brilliant or unhinged. Maybe both.
The system uses a combination of lidar and millimeter-wave radar to detect flying insects. It can track bugs as small as 2 millimeters moving at up to 1 meter per second. Once it locks on, it fires a laser within 3 milliseconds. The company claims it takes 0.003 seconds to kill a mosquito.
It also won’t kill bees or butterflies. The system identifies targets by wing vibration frequency and body shape. So your garden pollinators are safe. And if a person or pet walks into the scan zone? The laser locks itself out immediately. Same deal if it detects reflective surfaces like mirrors or glass.
Look, I haven’t used one myself. I need to be honest about that. Nobody outside the company has had a chance to independently test this thing yet. Every performance claim you see right now comes from the company’s own testing videos. That matters. We’ll know more once the first batch gets into real people’s hands.
But the numbers are wild.

And DEET is effective, but I don’t love the idea of slathering chemicals on my skin every evening.
The Photon Matrix is basically a small-scale air defense system for your patio. Silent. Chemical-free. No residue. You set it up, it scans the area, and it starts shooting.
That’s cool. But is it practical?
Here’s where I land. If you live in a place with a serious mosquito problem and you have a backyard or a patio where you actually spend time, this could be a game-changer. Not in a buzzwordy way — in a “I can sit outside at dusk without getting eaten alive” way. But it’s a high upfront cost. And we don’t yet know how well it works in real-world conditions. Indoors? In the wind? With multiple mosquitoes at once? The company says it’s tested, but I’d like to see third-party reviews.
Also, I should mention — this thing requires a power source. It’s “portable” in the sense that you can move it, not that you can take it camping. You’ll plug it in near where you’re sitting and let it do its thing.
To be fair, the company has been upfront about the safety features. The millimeter-wave radar constantly monitors the scan zone. The moment it detects a human or pet, it kills the laser. It also does a sweep before startup to check for reflective surfaces. So you’re not going to blind your neighbor or set your cat on fire. At least that’s the promise.
The crowdfunding numbers tell me there’s real interest. 5,000 people dropped nearly a thousand bucks each on a product that didn’t exist yet. That’s faith. Or desperation. Maybe a little of both.
I’m curious to see what happens when these units ship this month. Will people post videos of laser-mosquito action shots? Probably. Will some of those videos show it missing? Also probably. Will the internet lose its collective mind either way? Absolutely.
Here’s my honest take: the Photon Matrix is a genuinely impressive piece of engineering. Building a laser system that can identify, track, and kill a mosquito mid-flight while distinguishing it from other insects is not trivial. The fact that a small team pulled this off in three years is remarkable.
But the gap between an impressive demo and a useful daily tool is where products go to die. The company’s testing videos look great. They always do. The real test is whether this thing keeps working after a month of evening use. Whether the calibration holds. Whether it can handle the chaos of an actual backyard — wind, shadows, dust, the neighbor’s dog walking through the scan zone.
I’m not buying one yet. Not until I see independent reviews. But I’ll be watching. And honestly? If it works as well as they say, I might be willing to pay $988 to reclaim my summer evenings.
